Twisted square bars were used years ago as concrete reinforcement. The bond strength was not much better than plain bars. Nowadays, deformed round bars are used because of a much better bond between concrete and steel. This results in shorter development length, thus reduced weight of steel.

unlike the old twisted steel rods, modern reinforcing rods are designed to carry a high tensile loads. more tensile strenghth = more load capacity.
