How late are you?

03/31/2007 1:15 PM

I found this question in the internet somewhere and are interested in the opinions of others? Well I'll let you guys decide first your own answer without putting mine or the "official" one so as to allow free thinking.

Have fun

Kip was on his way to class. He was 5 minutes late leaving and then was stuck in traffic for 10 minutes. He ran into a friend just before arriving at class and talked with her for 13 minutes. How many minutes late was he to class?

End of question

He could be ahead of time on time or late. Without knowing class start time, or clue to that matter, you can not answer this question. "suppose that class beginning on," was not a part of the question, therefor can not be added now. There are 2 unknowns, start time and distance. (not so important.) Anyhow, 28 minutes is not the answer.

Kip, being a responsible fellow, allows for obstacles when reporting for class, so he was not late at all, in fact he had 2 minutes to spare....

Kip is 5 minutes late on way to class from usual time, plus 10 minutes stuck in traffic equals 15 minutes.

Per routine schedule. Talking to the friend before arriving at class for 13 minutes suggests, Kip had time to spare and was not late arriving at class! Perhaps, 2 minutes early at class on routine 30 minute schedule! Why else would Kip allocate 13 minutes of talking prior to arriving at class?

Best I can do, with information provided. It will be interesting to view other replies! Ha!

You forgot to figure in the fact that Kip's friend is a babe!

Kip got to class right on time. why? He was 5 minutes late leaving not 5 minutes late for the class. He talked with his friend for 13 minutes, knowing that he was 13 minutes earlier to the class.

Well I just want to say here that the "official" answer that I got was disappointing hence the post to see what other people thought.

Well, my own thought, is that he was leaving 5 minutes later that he planned or usually goes out (given usually means he will arrives right on time just as class starts), stuck in traffic for 15 minutes, and talk to a friend for 13 minutes before entering class.

A direct calculations would means he is late 28 minutes. My opinion is that he is late just 18 minutes. The first 5 minutes he's late is acceptable (so he woke up late this morn), but traffic is USUALLY is planned in any travelling more so a routine one. So, the 10 minutes in traffic will have to be the trick.

The friend is an acceptable cause, it did say he ran into the friend which indicates an unplanned and unforseen event (for some reason are acceptable excuse to him to be late). So, 13 mins here is arguably an addition to his lateness.

Well, that's my thoughts. I am waiting on yours. I'll wait until at least the middle of this week to post the "official" answer and a little explanation on why the answer is that (from me). Well, the point of this thread is to promote thought and discussion.

Kip wasn't late for class, he had 13 minutes to spare and spent it with his friend. Other factors to consider: what was the class subject, kind of car he drives and how serious is this'friend'!

Kip got 'tickled'. It's as mad as it sounds. I can't be bothered posting the full info.

If Kip is the prof, he isn't late - class won't start until he gets there. (Mr. Thorne, perhaps?)

If Kip is a student, he's already so late that he doesn't bother going to class at all - he just plans to borrow somebody else's notes.

If Kip is in Houston, being stuck in traffic for "only" ten minutes (rather than the usual hour) puts him way ahead of schedule. He gets to class very early.

If kip left 5mins late, then got stuck in 10 mins of traffic, maybe the 13mins of talk with the friend was infact his teacher who also was running late because they both went on a jolly the night before! so they were infact both on time to start the class!!

IT COULD HAPPEN!!

Just a note: The title of this is, How late are you? Well I left on time, and arrived on time, so I was not late!

This is a clear case of the future effecting the present. You think that in the future, at a certain time, you will be at work, so you modify your behaviour to make the future happen. You will then do all kinds of things to ensure that your vision comes true. I prefer the future I see when I don't have to be at work, and have lots of money. Unfortunately, my boss see's the same future as you.

Re: How late are you?

Well, another angle to this question. kip should be 15 minutes late to class. if you ask why? let follow this trail of thought:

Kip was 5 minutes late as to his usual time of leaving for the class, he was stuck in traffic for 10 minutes I believe this is not usually not factored into his transit time to class. I guess if he had left at his usual time it would have been a free-flow traffic and not been stuck in one. The time add up to 15 minutes.

He ran into a friend before arriving at the class, note that we are not being told the proximity of the position of meeting to the class, he could well have met his friend at a very close distance possibly at the entrance of the classroom. So the 13 minutes of talking with his friend would not have add up if he is at a close proximity to class and also a possibilitity of them moving toward the class or even planning to settle down in the class room. In the nut shell, the 13 minutes talking could have happened at a static or dynamic positions.

There have a lag time of 15 minutes and if I take the 13 minutes talking has happened on a dynamic platform, which could mean it as well as taken place in the class room. Or let say at a close proximity to the class. The whole arithmetric now totals to 15 minutes.

I think the tutor would have something to say about talking for 13 mins during a lecture, so he must have arrived before the tutor, even if he was late to the classroom.
