Jeep Error Code P0715: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction

03/31/2007 11:13 PM

Greetings…

Anyone who could advise me on changing a sensor on my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo would be greatly appreciated. Yesterday while driving Home from San Francisco my check engine light came on. I checked to see if my fluid were ok and everything seem fine also I paid close attention to my other gauges on the way home. All within normal levels i.e. oil pressure and engine temp… etc. I hooked up a code reader today and the code reader displayed (Code #1 P0715 which reads Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit Malfunction & Code # 2 P0731 Gear 1 Ratio Incorrect.)

Q: 1…How difficult of a repair is this? 2…Where is the sensor located? 3…Any good repair manuals that could help instruct me on fixing this? I find the Haynes not very useful for this problem.

Any feed back or even instruction on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers……… Kai

If the transmission is acting fine when driving Most likely you have a short or open in the wiring of the sensor or the sensor is bad itself. Most auto parts stores don't carry this sensor. you might be better off getting it at the dealer or a transmission shop. Not having to work on this particular car i don't know where it is located but it should be located on the front part of the bell housing of the transmission where it senses the speed of the torque converter. first off i would crawl under the car and see if you can locate it and the wiring to it, it is probably off to one side or on top of the bell housing. check the wiring to and from the sensor if all looks well take the sensor off and go to the dealer parts department or transmission shop to get a new one and test the car after clearing the codes, see if the code comes back.

if no luck there then it is probably time to take it to a transmission shop.

I had a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.7 V8, and it had two (2) identical speed sensors, one input and one output. The 6 cylinder engine uses the transmission with only 1 sensor. On my transmission, one sensor opened up, and the symptoms were hard shifting and a "clunk" when putting into drive. One sensor measures the input shaft speed, the other measures the output shaft speed. Check resistance by removing the connector at the end. I think they should read about 40 ohms. If the resistance is N/G, you can buy the sensor at Autozone for 1/2 the price of the dealer, and it is a Chrysler sensor.

If the sensors read the same value, then the problem is either in the wiring (chafed?) or with the transmission electronic control module. After the repair, you should have the problem re-set through the OBD II test port.

Good Luck!

FYI: if you are interested in buying the factory repair manuals, I still have them for my 2000, and they are new in the box. let me know at rcrowell@mbta.com.

just to chime in here, I just ran across this AGAIN on my 99 JGCL. Before it was the output sensor and this time it was the input sensor. Both bad sensors threw the same codes. about 3-5 codes all in the p0715 kinda range. If you are throwing the p0715 and any of the following, then check these sensors!

P0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0716 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0717 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal
P0718 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Intermittent
P0719 Torque Converter/Brake Switch B Circuit Low
P0720 Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0721 Output Speed Sensor Range/Performance
P0722 Output Speed Sensor No Signal
P0723 Output Speed Sensor Intermittent
P0724 Torque Converter/Brake Switch B Circuit High
P0725 Engine Speed input Circuit Malfunction
P0726 Engine Speed Input Circuit Range/Performance
P0727 Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal
P0728 Engine Speed Input Circuit Intermittent
P0730 Incorrect Gear Ratio
P0731 Gear I Incorrect ratio
P0732 Gear 2 Incorrect ratio
P0733 Gear 3 Incorrect ratio
P0734 Gear 4 Incorrect ratio

P0735 Gear 5 Incorrect ratio

someone mentioned checking it with an ohm meter, so I did and the bad one gave me no reading, the new autozone one gave me 700 something ohms, and the just over a year old autozone one gave me 500 something ohms.

Autozone tried to sell me a ~$17 input sensor even after giving them my engine details and that it was the 4wd grand cherokee, DO NOT GET THIS if you have the V8. go here for more information: http://www.wjjeeps.com/speed_sensors.htm

All you have to do is just pick a sensor and either check it with your ohm meter, or if you don't have that then you can just replace it and see if your problems go away after clearing the codes (with a code reader or by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes). If it doesn't go away then throw the sensor you have in your pocket into the other location. If it still doesn't go away then double check that the sensors are seated ALL the way into their spots (just ran into that and it took me half an hour to figure out what the problem was!)

PS if you have a WJ jeep then look here for how to read your codes on the odometer!!! http://www.wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm

I really hope this will help someone, because I know how freaked I was the first time my Jeep started clunking into and out of O/D and other gears and then I saw 5 codes!!!! I just knew it was going to be soooo expensive, but was relieved to find out that it was only 40 bucks for the solution!!!!
