Zero Emission Motorcycle Team Lennier & Gariba

08/03/2005 10:48 AM

Pardon the B5 reference, but reading this reminded me of an episode, and as much as I really HATE motorcycles, the advancement in fuel cell technology warrants a highlight. I really hope this will start a trend in alternate energy research...

The London-based company Intelligent Energy is building the bike (dubbed the ENV (pronounced "envy"), short for Emissions Neutral Vehicle. The motorcycle has a top speed of 50 miles an hour (80 kilometers an hour) and can run for 100 miles (160 kilometers) or up to four hours on a tank of compressed hydrogen. A fill-up costs about four dollars (U.S.).

Don't be talking smack about B5 =P
Anyway the really frustrating thing is we have the technology to build all these great low energy emission vehicles, but no way to get people to use them. I wonder how high gas prices have to get before people stop wanting to pay them.

Hydrogen Technology

Until the technology development settles down, nobody will buy it, hence, nobody will make it. The rising cost of fuel will make the general public look for alternatives, which is always a good thing, but few people are willing to risk substantial $'s on unproven and evolving technology. When the benefits of the new technology exceeds the cost, it will begin to happen. Once a critical mass is reached, it will become ubiquitous (eg: light bulbs replacing oil lamps). Fuel cells have a long way to go, and many of us really dislike motorcycles!
