Problem With a Wireless Router

02/23/2011 1:03 PM

Dear Members: I installed in my house a wireless router, D-Link 600. The first I bought last only few days and was replaced (warranty) by another, that last only one day.

I am thinking that perhaps the problem is that in my house I have a water pump, drive by a monophasic motor (450 W).

Is it possible? Any advice? Perhaps some filter?

Thanks to all.

Gabriel

It is certainly possible that power surges have damaged the equipment. Usually the warranty does not cover such misuse.

You should provide surge protection before you blow out the replacement as it is unlikely the retailer or the manufacturer will provide another unit under warranty (assuming that the motor indeed caused a surge, I can't really see it too well from my location). Check it out.

What about the rest of the hardware? Is your computer on a surge protector? Are you having trouble with any other hardware? The Electric motor could be causing voltage dips and spikes which could damage other equipment on the circuit. Is the router plugged into the same circuit as the motor? Your computer?

Hi: All appliances are in the some circuit. My computer has a stabilizer, but the wireless router has not. I have no problem with the router of internet provider, in spite it is connected directly to the line, but of course, perhaps the last is a more robust design. Gabriel

Put all your equipment on some sort of conditioner/surge protector. Depending on $$ you could put a soft start on your electric motor, Or perhaps isolate the electric motor to it's own circuit/breaker.

Third time lucky? I would try a third router( a different brand if possible ) After working in retail for many years :( it is entirely possible you have just copped a bad batch. Definately worth while trying before you spend dollars on a surge protection that generally isn't required assuming you haven't had any other issues with pc equipment in the same location.

All my experience's with "D-Link" have been bad. I use a Cissco based system with no problems.

Did you purchase it from a reputable dealer or from a large chain store that sells everything cheap? I've seem routers sold in chain stores, that were not up to the specs of the manufacturer.

You should seriously consider having a separate branch circuit for that motor load. In my house I also use separate dedicated branch circuits for computers, routers etc. Clean power is happy power

If you have the same problem like Gabriel, you just need a separate room for your pump and for router. If your router is out of work I would highly advise you to buy a new router, if you want to ask what router, in my opinion if you can afford one to which you can easily change the adress

Likewise, you can buy a good router. It will be a good investment.
