SA 325 Bolting

How to find the max.allowable shear stress for SA 325 bolt??

I need the value to calculate the bolting connection for my structure and I had refer to every std and spec available including ASTM and AISC but cannot find the specific value for max. allowable shear stress.

if anybody have any knowledge on how to get the value, many thanks...cheers.

Try to look at this link, SA 325 is ASTM A325 given there is Tensile strength. I suggest you refer to a machine design book, there is however formula or factors to relate tensile strength to maximum allowable shear stress.

Hello,

Here's a scanned copy of Table 1-D Shear obtained from the AISC Manual of Steel Construction, Eighth Edition. Allowable Shear Load values are in Kips per bolt. A Kip = 1000 Pounds-Force. Since this an older outdated edition, then I suggest that you obtain a newer edition of the manual for you reference and design work.

[NOTE: Please keep in mind that you need to determine the type of bolted connection (X, N or F), hole type(s), and the type of shear action (single or double). Additionally, you need to adhere to all of the pertinent provisions of the AISC Steel Manual code provisions. If you are not a formally trained Structural Engineer, then I strongly advise you not to undertake any sort of connection design; as with any structural design, connections are a critical structural component which incorrectly designed can possibly lead to failure, property damage, injury and death.]

thanks capt.

I already had the latest revision and study through the section but I also looked to the AISC 360-05, Sect. J3, table J3.2 that showed nominal shear stress stress is 330 Mpa. It is about 0.5 X min Yield Strength of the bolt.

So, in my opinion this value also good.

Ask your bolt distributor for the phone number or at least name of the manufacturer. Then ask their customer service to allow you to speak to their engineers. Get it from the horse's mouth.

Here is where you should begin your search.

For ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications see related Specification SA-325 in Section II of that Code.

"This specification covers two types of quenched and tempered steel heavy hex structural bolts having a minimum tensile strength of 120 ksi for sizes 1.0 in. and less and 105 ksi for sizes over 1.0 to 11/2 in., inclusive."

thanks everybody, good update about this bolt material because sometimes the client want to use this material as anchor bolt for equipment put on steel structure.
