Two books to start with:

i) Testing, Commissioning, Operation & Maintenance of Electrical Equipment - by S.Rao, Khanna Publishers, New Delhi

ii) Operation & Maintenance of Electrical Equipment Vol. I & II by B.V.S. Rao

I have requested some one going backhome for the same. I do remember a European engineering manager once use books from India, one of the book (great) had the author being Mr. Rao, I think. Another fellow engineer had a text book by B.L.T Raja (Indian author) as well? The professional book by Mr. Rao had a lot of great topics covered. I wonder how to get it from either India or Pakistan since Asian edition print would offer cheaper prices due to low quality paper used? :)

I would say its not necessary to buy a new book everytime,You can get used books at the 10 to 20% cost in 2nd hand books market, They are as good as new books specially for new learners and you can afford to buy as many as you want at lower cost, Don't know from where you are,but There is market (Nai Sarak) here in Delhi India excellent place for these things.
