03/09/2011 8:14 AM

How do i confirm if i can use an existing hob cutter to hobb a new gear pair..can anyone tell me what to check and if there is any formulae or programme for it. I was thinking only pr angle module and tooth depth and hob tip radius were to match now i hear you can cut gears with diffferent module cutters too. plz help me out...

Only you can determine if the cutter will suit, it can only be done by comparison.

It's 30 years since I last cut a gear!

A Hob cutter is defined by its Module

Therefore, a hob cutter can cut gears of the same module but with different number of teeth (different dametres).

If you want to cut a gear of a different module, then you use a diiferent hob cutter with the correct module size.

A Module defines the size of the tooth and its geometry in terms of shape, tip angle (as you say) etc. You need a small course in gear design to understand all of this. You can search the web for gear cutting and design...
