when the hard surface offers more resistance to indentation, why there was no mention of hardness values in hertz contact stress formula?
A perhaps cryptic analogy: Contact stress:elastic :: hardness:plastic.
To add to above anonymous poster, The modulus of elasticity does not depend on the hardness (at least significantly).
hertz contact stress is elastic deformation which we come across in say bearings (roller/race contacts) , Gears etc.
the static load carrying capacity of a bearing is the load at which the balls or the race deforms plastically by 0.0001d. how to find out exactly the plastic load required to have that indentaion?
