Question On My Cavalier

03/10/2011 11:49 PM

I drove my 1996 Cavalier home today and when I put it in park it kept rolling. Now it won't turn over at all. It is making a strange noise underneath the car like air blowing when I try to start it. My son said there is a clicking underneath the hood also when I was trying to start it.

Check your battery connections to starter motor and chassis.

It sounds like the starter motor is turning ["air blowing" noise] the solenoid is 'clicking', but not enough power is getting through to engage the pinion.

Or your battery has had it.

The rolling possibility is the link to the transmission has slipped or failed - so you're in neutral - not park.

Or; you have sheared off the park pin/ball/detent/whatever thingy, by using Park as a means of stopping, not as a device for remaining parked.

Bear in mind I have no idea what a 1996 Cavalier is, aside from it's probably a car.

I am assuming that you have the 2.2 engine and if you do I have several that I have had to replace the flex plate on because it appears that some of the flex-plate were manufactured with either a soft are miss sized teeth on them. At about 150,000 miles they will start shedding the teeth on the flex-plate. On everyone that I have found this I have also had to rebuild the starters because the rear bushings were worn out If the bushing went first or the flex-plate I can't tell you for sure. You can pull the starter and inspect the flywheel and see if it is missing any teeth make sure that you make a mark on the flex-plate and torque converter so if they are separated you can make sure that you get them back in the same index so that you don't get an imbalance condition when it is bolted back together. Good Luck

The reason that It won't go into park is more than likely an out of adjustment shift linkage or a stretched shift cable. You can reach down on the top of the trans where the shift linkage is and see if it will move and if it does then watch the link on the ball connection and see if it is worn and has slack which will not allow it to fully engage the parking pawl in the trans.
