Lowest Service Temperature For Steel Selection

03/13/2011 4:06 AM

Hi.

I was trying to understand how must be steel selected in accordance with European standard.

Eurocode 3 refers to lowest service temperature for design against brittle fracture. But I can't find what is the definition of "lowest service temperature". Is it one-day mean or five-day mean or maybe something else?

I would think it is the lowest temperature the steel will feel in its lifetime. It doesn't have to be sixty below for very long to cause brittle fracture.

I think you must consider the minimum "metal" temperature that is expectable, taking into account any variables (weather, fluid temperature, thermal insulation, heat tracing, etc.)

Kind regards
