Power Generation. Fuel: Crude Oil

03/13/2011 7:18 AM

I am interested in PROS & CONTS on using crude oil for construction the power plant upto 50 mW ? There is shortage of power in some areas where crude oil is avaliable and chipest solution. Generators can be low RPM's generators on 11 kV voltage level.

Will appreciate comments from experience engineers in such a Project.

thks & rgds

Tom

Are we talking about Crude oil, i.e. totally unrefined, or about heavy fuel oil, the lowest fraction of refining above bitumen, the type of product used to fuel ships. Both are impractical for micro power stations but for different reasons. Please clarify your terminology and we will detail the pros and cons.

Hello Jhh.

Thank you for your comments. I have in hand paraameters of crude oil in the area :

Data from OGJ 99 were originally published in 1983 as part of series entitled "Guide to Export Crudes for the 80's.

API Gravity 33.7 OGJ 99

Sulphur ( weight %) 1.95 OGJ 99

Pour Point ( oC) -15 OGJ 99

Kinematic Viscosity ( mm2/s or cSt)

Temperature

(oC)

10 15 OGJ 99

Yield on Crude (weight %)

Boiling Range

(oC)

C1 - C4 1 OGJ 99

Light naphtha (C5-65) 4

Heavy naphtha (65-175 16

Kerosene ( 175-225) 8

Gas Oil ( 225-360) 23

Heavy gas oil ( 360-525) 25

Residue ( greater that 525) 23

does this help you to continue your comments/advise??

I worked on commissioning two 40 megawatt crude oil diesel generators in Guam (pacific) but there was little to compensate for the extra complexity to run on heavy oil, unless the efficiency at 180 grams per Kw hour was outstanding. Not a set to install in a developing country. Penttijp
