Inspiron 6000 Battery Charging Problem

03/19/2011 6:02 AM

Yesterday, I had my original battery replaced with a new one and it does not get charged and the charge light flashes orange/green. Any idea what it might be?

Are you using the charger originally supplied with the laptop?

Is the replacement battery a "genuine" Dell part?

Do you still have the old battery, and can you put it back in again?

I just had another try with it and the message is "The model number for the primary battery cannot be determined. This will prevent any battery present from charging. Please insert a Dell battery for best system operation." I only bought it because it was £30 plus postage and has a much higher current rate than the original battery that also abruptly went down, within a month after it gave me 2-3 warnings that it is getting old and it's time to replace it. Unfortunately, the original is still too expensive over £100 and I am p***off with this Dell bull***t. This battery came from china and took me 2weeks to get it but I am not happy at all now.

Sounds like your computer manufacturer has included logic in their charging system to make any battery except one you buy from them not work.

Can you charge it outside the laptop? Maybe once it's fully charged, it will work? I don't know anything about this, except it sounds like you are the victim of proprietary software.

To quote PWSlack, "if all else fails, read the instructions".

In my experience, a flashing red and green light means your battery pack is too hot to charge. On top of the aforementioned compatibility problem, which can be resolved by replacing the thermocouple and id chip from the Dell battery to the new one, your battery could also be overheating or the thermocouple could be faulty causing a prematurely high reading.

I disagree because the charge light flashes green & orange alternatively and if I put the old battery in then the orange light flashes only. It seems I'm srcewed with this machine to have such a propriority software that knows no compromise. I've just checked another Dell accerssories site and the original battery can be bought for just under £70 that makes it twice more expensive and its only 4400mA, instead of 7200mA like the one I have.

"instead of 7200mA like the one I have." That you can't use. It might as well be 720000mA.

Let me quote you again, if I may, "Making mistake is part of learning."

Some info needed.

1. Before replacing battery was it ok showing battery charging Battery LED continuously ON.

2. Is new battery of the type recommended by Sony?

Problems in Sony Inspiron 6000 [may be in all Sony products What I have diagonosed in my daughter-in-law's]:

1. It does not accept the Compatible battery.

2. You note the its adapter has a centre pin which senses the condition of battery and adapter includes a control & Indication circuit built-in.

3. If the centre wire is broken or the circuit in adapter is not working or not mating due to connector problem it will not sense the battery.

4. If the new battery is dead even then led will flash as it is not drawing current.

Psst ... Haajee ... think you'll find that the Inspiron is a Dell machine. Some models use Sony batteries.

My inspiron came with a Sanyo battery that didn't blow up like the Sony ones but Sony recalled a lot of their laptop batteries at the time. Anyway this morning the supplier said they'll look into the matter and I am waiting now for their response and keep you posted.
