Ford Fuel Line Fittings

03/20/2011 8:29 AM

Using the right tool, I cannot get the sleeve to move to release the fitting.

If you remember how Ford does it, it is sort of a Quick Disconnect maybe sometimes called a bayonet fitting.

Anyway, pressing and releasing (for lack of a better way to put it) has hard as I can I cannot get the fuel line to come off of the fuel filter.

I have done this successfully before.

Am I screwed or what?

Have you relieved the system pressure?

That's all I have to say on the matter, cause that's all I know.

I have a Ford, but am too old and weak (lazy) to do my own work.

The problem is that I do not think there IS any system pressure.

To make matters worse, this Ford Van has a wheelchair lift which blocks access to the fuel tank - which probably has to come out if it is a fuel pump problem.

Someone else who is a little better "tooled up" than I came and got the truck so it is out of my hands now.

Oh, for the days of hose clamps and distributor points.

If I remember right there's a horseshoe-shaped clip that holds the fitting together. You push this out sideways, then the fitting should come apart. I don't think the clip comes off completely, you just press it back in to reassemble.

Cheers..........Codey

On Toyota s I have used Hot Water to temporarily soften the fitting, And allow it to be disconnected. maybe worth a try with your application.

Google is your best friend. One of these tools pictured always worked with all the Ford I've ever had. There will be some residual pressure in the line. I have always disconnected the fuel line relay and idled the engine still it stalls. I can't promise you this method won't hurt modern injectors. The best way is probably to purge the pressure from the fuel rail (I don't have that tool.) Also, gas is dangerous. With the line disconnected expect some fuel to pour out.

I picked my disconnect tool up at the local auto parts store. The guy at the counter told me the specific size I needed to use.

Also plenty of actual Ford techs use the Ford truck forums and will give you very specific information as to what to expect.

The tool I have is a little different, and I can see this is a better one because the length will give you more leverage.

I was going burn the end of the filter off with the torch when Craig said he take care of it. (just kidding)

The tool that "pretendgineer" suggested is the right one to use. Try pushing the tool into the fitting and then holding the tool stationary in relation to the tubing and then let the tubing and the tool come out of the fitting together. This is kind of a "three handed operation sometimes...... You may need to push in on the fitting to start with about 30 or 40 pounds of force if there is pressure in the fuel line to get it to release. Be ready to get sprayed with a little fuel. Of coarse be sure to take precautions against fire. You know, have an open flame near by and smoke a cigarette while doing this. Oh wait!!! that's what to do to cause a fire.... Whoops!
