Device Net communication for AC Drive

03/22/2011 4:03 AM

Dear Sir,

I am using 37kw control technique ac drive(UNI DRIVE CLASSIC SERIES) on our machine. I don't know which type of signal coming on drive for rev or for run. I want to replace this drive with some other brand but I am still in confusion for its connection of device net protocol. if I purchase new drive with device net module then how to configure with existing plc system? is it possible to run diffrent brand drive with existing communication signal???

No, highly unlikely. The DeviceNet memory map for the new drive won't match the existing drive unless it was intentionally designed to.

Your PLC system will have a DeviceNet scanner module that has to be reconfigured to remove the old drive's DeviceNet adapter out of its scanlist, the new drive's adapter added to the scanner's scanlist, and the PLC program changed to match up its logic to the drive.

What brand is the PLC system?

Dear Sir,

total 5 invertor drives are connected with device net communication module which is name is CJ1W-DRM21 of OMRON brand.

Complete PLC is CJ1W series.

Please check electrical wiring of unit drive communication module UD77.

I want to install new drive which is easly available in our local market & also has thid communication protocol.

Sorry, can't be of much help with that little schematic. What you are trying to do will have to be performed by someone with experience. I suggest you contact your local Omron representative for a list of local contractors that can help.

Here is a link to the CJ1W-DRM21 Devicenet scanner data sheet.

Dear Sir,

Now please inform me if it is possibilities for us to install a third party drive by-self? This is very sad news for us that our existing drive UNI 3405 is no more in production by Control Technique and if any of one drives in fault, we will be stuck. So we have to prepare our selves for such situation.

Your provided litrature I have already but I want to understand which type of singnal are comming from PLC of drive forward & revers or enable?

No, not unless the new device has been designed specifically to do so.

The DeviceNet connection allows the PLC to read & write bits, bytes, & words of information with the drive that represent these signals that you are interested in.

If I was in your position I would:

1. Contact Control Techniques to see if they now sell a direct replacement for the out-of-production drive that does not require a change in programming.

2. When I googled this drive, I found several companies that state they have refurbished (or repaired) drives of this type in stock. You could purchase one of these to replace your damaged drive. Then send your damaged drive in for repair so that you have a refurbished drive in your stock in preparation of the next failure.

Dear Sir,

Yes you are right, but as per your mention 2 points I already done. our existing drive cant repair & I contact to control technique for new replacement & also discuss with lecktronics, classic automation & plccenter for refurbish but not available. I purchased only one new drive from control technique but they are saying that was last in thier stock & we can be face again same type of problem & no back up drive with me.

1- control techniqe interduce UNI DRIVE SP series for repllacement but they are saying that our existing device net module UD77 cant run with SP series becouse UD77 cantains software to check position for our application limit switches.

2- I contact to our machine supplier for this problem. they are giving us same option of SP series but with complete kit & give us offer as two engg will be come to pakistan for installation.

I purchased existing drive drive with 8600USD(obsuleet)

Now our machine supplier giving this kit with 10,100EURO with minimum 4 days stay in pakistan & other expensis.

Now tell me how can we offord very high cost option???

these are details & reason to put request here for an other solution.

I hope you have to understand my problem.

The only other option that I can think of is that you buy the materials and perform the installation & s/w changes yourself. The good thing about that is you can do it yourself the next time it happens.
