Does ASME B31.8 Apply to Gas Injection in a Well?

03/24/2011 5:55 PM

First of all, sorry for my english. I have this problem with the design of a pipe wich will inject gas into a well of petroleum for secondary recovery. The point is that the client (the owner) ask for using of the B31.8 for the piping design, and this system will be handled gas at 7000 psi aprox, from two compressors (one of middle pressure, and a second one of high pressure) So, my doubt is if the client is wrong selecting B31.8 as design code instead of B31.3 which has a chapter dedicated to high pressure service. Or this pressure condition is within the scope of B31.8?

The ASME code B31.8 is not applicable to be used with that piping system, see ASME B31.8 Para. 802.12 (f) and also due to higher pressure of 7000 psi which exceeds the ASME B16.5 Class 2500. So you have to use ASME code B31.3, Chapter IX, High Pressure Piping.

You'll have to ask someone smarter than me about this but I think the owner has the right to ask for a particular code to be used. I checked B31.8 and I don't see anything excluding high pressure, so you can tell your client that you advise using B31.3 for high pressure piping. I know there's multiple piping codes out there but I don't know them all unfortunately.
