this should give you some good background information from a US Manufacturing point of view of what the story is on several materials, not just steel.

Lowest quality steel would be the lowest priced. That would seem to be ASTM A-6 Astm A36 for Bar stock, as opposed to ASTM A 108 Special Bar Quality cold Finished.

Lots of factors, cost of iron ore, charcoal. coal, electricity, degree of shortage, state of economy.

try a few spot market lookups.

Vaan, firstly the prices of steel varies from each country, so you would first like to check on your market. That said, I am fairly sure that mild steel have a higher value of reselling because that they are the easiest to be "recycled" or melted and used again.

Well as India is one of the major exporters of steel, the price there should be lower than that in other countries. For your reference, the selling price of scrap metal here in Malaysia (according to my local scrap metal buyer) is roughly one MYR (Malaysian Ringgit) for every 2 kg (1 MYR = 0.2864 USD).

I hope that helps. Regards

Well they do make cheap bikes (^_^ hurray to my ProBike II) and stuffs.. You just have to be careful inspecting your item when purchasing (I saved half the cost and the bike isn't that bad).

Yes quality can be a major issue, many items start out as good then the rat-bags cheapen the finished product and pocket the difference. They call it product improvement.

But still they cant beat the Japanese. They actually improved the product (by simplifying the mechanical parts allowing longer part life - they called it "Evaluation Methodology for Post-manufacturing Issues in Life-cycle Design").

And instead calling it Product Improvement - they just say Product Innovation and increased the price exponentially higher.

Well I just noticed I spelled your name wrong maan (sorry vaan is word I normally hear here in Malaysia). It was unintentional and was due to my seemingly uneducated (a.k.a. stupid) ignorance. Just curious, what does the vaan and maan means anyway?

In addition to my earlier post, I am no way are involved in the metallurgy industry but from my experience as an apprentice in a mechanical workshop, we mainly used ms and ss as standard materials in our design. Mild steel is probably the cheapest of all materials commonly used. Aside from quality (we used one only one type of ms so I can't elaborate much on that), the shape of the steel that you are buying also affects the price.

The cheapest of shapes will be either the metal sheets or a stock bar. Any other shapes such as L channel, C channel, U channel, Hollow, etc. would have higher cost. Complex shapes or custom components are better off moulded or cnc'ed. Either you send for a fabrication shop or open your own workshop (such as we did).

Stainless steels are EXPENSIVE. They are used mainly as the parts in contact with foods or for aesthatics. They are rarely used for structural purpose.

As for scraps, they are cheap they are, well, scraps. But in reality, scrap metals for an average person are not cheap. It is actually cheap relative to the price of a stock bar. But this is of course, the general view in Malaysia.

Regards,

CLoud
