What Email Client to Use to Send Mail From an IEEE Alias?

03/28/2011 10:28 AM

I've tried several combinations of settings with windows mail and thunderbird..

I figured there could be something I'm doing wrong..

I use gmail and i've set that as my IEEE forwarding address when I made my alias..

I don't know how to figure out the pop or imap settings..

thunderbird tried to configure it automatically.. but ieee doesnt have a mail server for that purpose..

i want to send mails from my ieee alias.. i've no problem with receiving them

can anyone help?

If you are signed up for the free g-mail service, I do not believe that you will have access to set up g-mail "Dynamic" POP/SMTP Server.

I don't know about paid subscription benefits.

Try contacting G-Mail Tech/Customer Support

I guess I was sort of thinking along similar lines.

To the op, I guess you're trying to send the mail out using smtp and using server smtp.gmail.com (or something similar, I don't know if google has more than one).

Or, are you trying to send the email from google's webmail client?

I would think that the possibilities are better using smtp, but google might block "3rd party mail".

(I use pop3 (receiving) / smtp (sending) with kmail on a free basis, I don't know exactly what dynamic means in this case, or whether I'd be prevented from using the pop/smtp server dynamically on a free basis.)

Sorry, I should have read your email more carefully. I'm assuming you were using windows mail and thunderbird successfully before you tried to set them up to send from your ieee address?

Just in case you weren't, here are the settings I use (in kmail):

  • smtp server: smtp.gmail.com
  • port: 587
  • encryption: TLS
  • authentication: required, plain text

Because you need authentication, you will have to enter your google id, and either also enter your password in the configuration or each time you send email.

Now that I think about it, I'm much more certain that google and most responsible email servers prevent this kind of use (that is, sending email using their server but with a different source address) to cut out some kinds of spam.

In fact, I think there's even a term for it, which I can't think of at the moment.

now for the next dilemma.. creating a good professional signature..

all the software involved are proprietory .. and what little html code i know just seem useless..

on sending the email.. it only stays as code on the receiving end..

I don't understand why you say "it only stays as code on the receiving end"?

Are you creating a plain text signature, or are you including HTML, or maybe even some code to do some sort of animation?

(I'd like to recommend you stick with just plain text--to me, that is much more professional.)

But, explain a little bit more, and I imagine someone here will be able to help.

In old versions of outlook we used to be able to include signatures with tables..

now certain companies are offering proprietory software for just including a good signature..

i'd like to include my facebook and twitter links along with their logos with my signature..

So what is (are) the problem(s)?

Presumably, the facebook and twitter links are showing up as just a plain URL as opposed to the typical blue (and or underlined) named link? E.g., you see something like http://twitter.com/blah/blah.blah instead of something like My Twitter Link.

And, how do the logos show up--is there just a string of very random looking characters showing up?

And finally, which email client are you now using? Thunderbird?

(I don't use Thunderbird, so I can't easily help you, but I suspect someone can.)

Changing this back to 'on topic' to get more attention.
