Question on Memory Card Slot

03/31/2011 7:51 PM

If my Nokia cellular phone has a slot for a memory card of 2 GB, would its functioning be okay if I fit a greater capacity memory card (say of 8 GB), of the same size and with the contacts correctly fitting, in the slot?

What about putting a lesser capacity memory card of say 512 MB (again of same size and contacts correctly fitting) in the slot? In short my question is if I can put memory cards of another size in a slot meant for a particular size (as it came with my cellular phone).

Yes,

Any capacity card can be used.

Check the on-line manual. The printed manual that comes with the phone is rubbish[1]; the on-line one is a little bit better.

If it works with a 2 GB card, it will (almost certainly) work with a smaller capacity one, but (unless the manual says otherwise) may not work with a larger one.

[1] The manual that came with my Nokia didn't even specify what type of memory card to use, never mind the capacity - it just said (paraphrasing) 'use only the correct type ...'. No wonder Nokia are fretting about their future.

There usually is a maximum memory limitation based on any platform's operating system. Most cell phones today can easily access all parts of an 8GB card but I'm also certain that some Nokia cell phones cannot access memory above 2^32 bits.

Thanks guys. Redfred, when you say OS, are the ones for cellular phones different or is it the same as Computers like Windows XP, Vista, Snow Leopard etc.?

"...when you say OS, are the ones for cellular phones different or is it the same as Computers like Windows XP, Vista, Snow Leopard etc.?"

Everything with a microprocessor in it, such as a cell phone, PDA, personal computer, digital camera etc. etc., has to have an OS, or Operating System to function. But is it "like Windows"? Gawd, I hope not! Most small simple devices have their own custom OS because the tasks they need to do are relatively narrow. There are a lot of changes going on now however as devices get more and more capable ad have to interface with other programs etc. So that's what the differences are with an Android phone for example compared to an Apple iPhone: different OS. But not because they needed that for the phone functionality itself, that was simple. They have added a more complex OS because we want them to do a lot more than just be a phone. So as of recent events, a smart phone OS is indeed a lot more like a "Windows" OS.

And yes, there are Windows phones now, but I wouldn't touch one...

Thanks JRaef,

You nailed it. This is exactly what I was talking about. I think that most Nokia phones use the Symbian operating system.

It is possible that it could register the 8GB card as a 2GB depending on the software in the phone. But I'm mostly sure it will at least recognise it and utilize however much of it the software will support.

It certainly is possible. I'm not very familiar with the Symbian OS or which specific Nokia phone we're talking about so anything is possible.

A plausible use of this operating system limitation could be applied to an espionage (corporate or political) scenario. I won't bore you with the details how to do this, but I'm sure you can think of how this would work.

That's kind of what I think too. I've had DIMM modules that had more capacity than my motherboard would recognize, and it just used them at the capacity it could. Kind of a waste of money though.

I have heard, but cannot confirm, that Nokia is moving away from Symbian. Whoops! Just confirmed. From Wikipedia, "In February 2011 Nokia announced a plan to make Microsoft Windows Phone 7 its high end smartphone operating system..."

Hi.

When dealing with a device such as a cell phone, digital camera, printer, scanner etc the "OS" it's called "firmware".

Cheers,

Your 8G shold work, your phone is the limiting factor. It will only store 2G. Much the same as a HDD and your program that requires 37.8GB to run (if it's Win7 Pro) on a 640GB HHD.

Why don't you just go to www.Nokia.com and post this question to the help desk?
