Double Insulated Cable Selection

Hi all

I have a 415V starter connected to a 1.1kw (2.5A flc). I am using a 3pole 32A socomec Fusebloc (part No.3841 3103) with a 10A fuse protecting the motor.

my question is how do I select the double insulated cable in the fault free area going from the mains supply to the unprotected side of the fuse switch. I have a standard selection sheet that recomends 10mm double insulated for a 32A fuseswitch but I would like to know how these values are obtained.

The cable must be rated for the maximum possible current on the incoming mains supply. The rating of the downstream stuff (in this case your fuseblock) is irrelevant.

thanks but im looking to understand the values on a standard refrence sheet we are provided. I am aware the max current must be accounted for and as the fuse switch is also rated for full current capacity we use its size as a refrence .I am required to ensure the double insulated cable going from the (busbar/droppers/mains) to the fuseswitch is able to handle the same as the fuseswitch, and as you said the fuses render anything downstream of the fuseswitch irrelevant.

to be more clear im looking for the calculation used to obtain the following data taken from are standard reference sheet.

(fuseswitch direct to riser,double insulated cable) .

Up to 20A = 6mm2

Up to 32A = 10mm2

Up to 63A = 16mm2

Up to 100A = 35mm2

Up to 160A = 2 x 25mm2

Up to 200A = 2 x 35mm2

Cable sizes listed in standards (in particular BS7671) tend to be just tablulated - no formula is given (except sometimes for de-rating).

The nearest thing I can find in BS7671 is for sizing protective conductors, where the formula is:

S = √(I2t) / k,

where

  • S is the cross-sectional area
  • I is the maximum fault current
  • t is the time for the protective device to disconnect
  • k "is a factor taking account of the resistivity, temperature coefficient and heat capacity of the conductor material, and the appropriate initial and final values."

(Values of k are tabulated).

If you plot S against I for the ratings you listed, it's more-or-less a straight line, suggesting that a formula of this form would fit:

In short, it's all a bit of a black art.
