Glass to Aluminum Flexible Sealant

04/06/2011 7:35 AM

Would anyone be willing to throw out a sealant that would be suitable for glass to aluminum, undergoing daily heat cycles from -25C to 100C. The intended purpose is to contain 10 PSI in the vessel. The sealant will fill a 1/4 " bevel at the inside to 1/16" clearance between the two materials on the outside, with a 1/16" gasket providing spacing during sealant application. The finished seal will be a fillet, as in a weld fill. The final sealant needs to remain flexible, and is shaped like a wedge, with the pressurized side being the 1/4" being pushed toward the 1/16" material clearance. The sealant will be applied into the bevel. Thanks for taking the time!

This is not my field of expertise, but here goes...

1. What is the aluminum surface treatment? Is it painted, anodized, bare? Paint and sealants do not adhere well to unfinished aluminum, so some thought must be given to the surface finish.

2. I assume that the pressure will push the glass toward the aluminum contact surface, rather than way?

My first thought would be to look at what the auto industry uses for sealing car windshields to car frames.

This may not be an ideal solution, so you want to get the sealant manufacture information and then give them a call. Hopefully, an application engineer will be available to suggest the right type of sealant.

I think the crux of the issue here is to contact sealant manufactures and ask them for suggested products. It is in their interest to advise their customers on the best solution for the customer's needs.

I don't see why silicone sealant couldn't be used. It remains flexible, adheres to most surfaces, can handle the temp range. But Anonymous Hero is right, you should contact a sealant manufacturer or dealer (like this UK one) to get a recommendation.

Silicone sealants are a good choice to seal most of the gases in air. A problem with silicones is that they exhibit high water vapor transmission. If this is not a problem in your application, I'd recommend silicone.

try #900 solar seal

I've used this product for numerous and varied non-traditional applications with great success.

Send me your address and I will send you free the sealant which will take care of your need and will be stable from -25 to 100C. Sealant is based on Polyvinyl acetate chemistry and will bond aluminum and glass very well and will not degrade
