Mill DC Motor Problem

A forward-reverse DC motor was working perfectly in our mill;How do i correct the following:(1)sometimes when forward push button is pressed,it moves forward & at times it behaves otherwise(reverse),(2)It also takes high current

You may use contactors which have mechanical interlocks also. When forward action is on then reverse contactor cann't be picked up and vice-versa. You may also check the control ckt. thouroughly to check any leakage or contactor sluggishness etc.

The motor actually works perfectly at certain times & behave abnormally at some other times,taking high currents

whats the motor capacity (its hp and volt rating) is u make forward ,reverse frequently? whats the actual process ur doing?

Generally it means the switching has dirty, sticky, or eroded contacts, so some are not 'making' while others might not be 'breaking'.

It can happen quite early in a switch systems life, if 'reversing' is used as a brake in a switch system designed about 'normal deceleration'.

Reversing will produce currents far in excess of 'normal deceleration' contact design amps.
