Flanges Calculation

04/12/2011 11:11 PM

Dear All,

Since I am a Welding Engineer, forgive me if I am not clear enough-

Flanges are A694 Gr.65, ranging from 8'' to 32 with different pressure classes (300,900 and 1500)", piping engineer asked vendor to provide Flange calculation only for 30" and 32" class 1500 flanges.

As I know ASME B16.5 max. upto 24'', ASME B16.47 above 24''..... Also A694 is unlisted material in both mentioned codes, should not Vendor provide flange calculation for all flanges irrespective of class and size.

Please give me a lecture or literature to understand the whole process, when to ask for flange calculation. As always expecting reply from Mr. Abdel and other Gurus...

Regards

Manpreet Singh

Manpreet...

Steel flanges for piping and pressure vessel duty cannot be made from any material.

It is my understanding that A694 is rolled steel strip. It is not a forged material

For smaller flanges, a material approved by the piping or pressure vessel code is advised. Forged material is most often used for flanges such as ASTM A105 (CS) or A182 (SS).

It is my understanding that a "flange vendor" will not give you a calculation, but a fabricator of an entire pressure vessel or a piping system would.

Approved bolting materials must also be considered

ASTM A694 / A694M - 08 Standard Specification for Carbon and Alloy Steel Forgings for Pipe Flanges, Fittings, Valves, and Parts for High-Pressure Transmission Service

A694 Gr.F65 is carbon steel forging specified in ASME or MSS dimensional standard. If you use ASME B16.5 and B16.47 standard flange dimensions, flange stress calcuation shoud be exempt per ASME Code.

If the flange is a standard, i.e nominated by its NPS and Class/rating, and its materiall is listed at the code (or equivalent to a listed material), hence you can find all dimensions from the tables of that code. Otherwise, you have to proceed the required flange calculation as per ASME BPVC, Sec. VIII, Div. 1.

Please refer to CR4 Thread 24"- 2500lb Blind Flange Design (Urgent).
