Torque Calculation and Display

04/14/2011 12:44 AM

If someone can help me out with displaying the torque exerted by tool diretly onto the cnc system. In short whenever a CNC machine is working its CNC system should reflect the total torque required by specific operation.

Do you mean you want torque feedback or you need to pre-calculate the needed torque? And what kind of CNC? You don't expect any serious answers on a so badly phrased question do you?

Any way Thanks for your comments.

I am serious.

I need to have the total torque exerted by the spindle on to the job when it is doing drilling / machining on VMC. The total torque should be displayed directly onto the system.

Please reply in case you have any solution.

Ok. I'll try to give some points on one possible version of your question (the feedback) You know that the spindle motor speed fluctuations and current is closely related to the cutting forces it has to override. Depending on the motor control type that acc/decelerations and current changes combined with other data like it's moment of inertia can give some feedback of the forces on e.g. your flute as it cuts. Is that what you have in mind? In my opinion you can't easily have feedback fast enough to respond. When your cutter for some reason digs it's game over. S.M.

The method depends on the uncertainty which will satisfy your needs. If you can accept an uncertainty of several % (up to 10%) then a current measurement with a calibration can be enough. If you need a higher precision (in the 1% range) then you MUST use a torque measurement device which will make the system much more complex. I mentioned "calibration" because between the current in the motor and the torque at the cutting tool edge there are nonlinear losses function of different parameters as speed, temperature, wear of bearings aso..
