Man Made Spider Silk

08/08/2005 9:30 AM

It looks like one of the long held goals of material science may have been finally reached: how to make a super strong version of spider silk, the silk used to make the egg sacs so it is the strongest and most weather proof. Maybe now the Spider-Goats will be able to mass produce the stuff and we will have tons of a new material that makes titanium look heavy and brittle.

Body Armor

It would be cool if they could make bullet-proof clothing, but that seems kind of far-fetched. Imagine if it could be done though?

Seems as though that would be a project this material lends itself to. Are'nt current bulletproof vests made from woven Kevlar? This new material could have a myriad of invaluable applications....safety clothing, vehicle bodywork sections, etc. Maybe it could eventually replace carbon fibre altogether?

That's true. Plus, anytime you make something stronger yet lighter, there is a whole slew of applications from airplanes to elevators.
