Heat Treating Low Carbon Alloy Steels

04/16/2011 11:03 PM

Hi.Can somebody tell if time gap between carburising and hardening and subsequent tempering can lead to development of internal cracks. If yes; then what should be the time gap.I am talking of piston pins made of low carbon steels.

Tempering should take place as soon as possible/practical after the parts reach approximately room temperature. I have watched 25% of a shifts' production of door closer parts (pinions) turn into scrap because of parts waiting to be tempered because employees walked off for shift change... There is a tremendous amount of stress in the martensite.

I would simultaneously look at the severity of the quenching process and change the quenching medium , if necessary. Quenching in salt baths gives much more control over and consistency in the process than oil/water/brine. A li'l more expensive approach, but depends on what your stakes are.
