Unstable Polarity on an Electric Motor

04/19/2011 4:32 PM

I own an old AMF Radial arm saw. The polarity on the motor has become unstable, and tends to start in the reverse position. Can I repair this motor? and how?

I have basic knowledge of elecrtic motors, and have done things such as replace brushes. I was simply starting a discussion based on my knowledge of the situation. Your sarcasm was uncalled for, tho I hope it made you happy.

Welcome to the forum

no sarcasm intended, just a statement of local operational fact

If you tell us things like:

model#

make, size & model# of the motor

date of manufacture

*

You will be much more likely to get the proper solution

otherwise you see what happens

a bunch of wild guesses

Yes, send this to a motor shop. If you want to keep this great piece of equipment running. And I sure hope you do! There are not too many of them around that I am aware of. Since you are only talking about the motor, I am assuming that the ways are still accurate and cut perfectly.

Hi Mike,

Although you have not given much information regarding this motor, if the motor is capacitor start then your problem would indicate that the capacitor is faulty.

Replace the capacitor with exactly the same rating and voltage and your problem should be cleared.

On a single phase motor the capacitor will offset the phase angle of the starting winding and thus determines the direction of operation.

Hope this helps.

GA - 99% the case, but it might be dirty switch contacts messing the capacitor up.

GA

I would just change the advice from "exactly the same rating and voltage" to the same capacitance and at least the same voltage and temperature rating.

AMF (who later became DeWalt) used cap start single phase motors for the most part, so yes, most likely your cap is failing; they don't last forever and if it sat around un-powered for years, the cap could be toast.
