In a resistor grid system, you change resistance for the rotor in steps by shorting out various parts of the grid with contactors or step switches. So the resistance and therefore torque changes are stepped. With a liquid resistor it is infinitely variable, it accomplishes stepless change in torque.

GRR makes lot of noise and vibration during starting especially in HV application.

LRR needs a large space for electrolyte tank but give us a smooth start.

What else?
