Fire Alarm/Suppression System For Underground Ore Conveyors

04/23/2011 4:48 AM

I request experts to suggest suitable fire alarm/suppression system for underground ore conveyors used in steel making. The handling system consists of wagon tipplers at ground level then apron feeders, shuttle conveyors and cross country conveyors 9one below other) installed underground up to -30 m level.

What is the product on the conveyors? I can't think of anything used in steel making other than coke that would be flammable. Basically it just the possibility of a belt or motor fire.

Water sprays would be my choice.

Product on conveyors are iron ore (lumps/sized/fines), dolomite and lime stones. Coke is solid fuel which is made from coking coal. There is separate stream of similar material handling equipments for coal.

I want to know about advanced system of fire detection, alarm and suppression along with necessary codes & standards. The aim is to minimise the damage.

Linear type heat detection (Protectowire, Alarmline, etc) mounted above the conveyor and along it's length for areas that don't get above 375 F or so. Cable can be directly mounted to a sprinkler main, also run along the conveyor. Heads are all open and operate in "deluge" mode. Detection system is connected to a control panel which opens a deluge valve, extinguishing the fire. If the areas in question are above 375 F, hire a local Fire Protection Engineer. There are solutions, although maybe more limited.

Pritam: I have found the original posting, and will give it some thought over the next few days. Yours is interesting, and I do agree with the last gentleman's posting in reply to your clarifying information as to what was being transported on the conveyor. Thank you. DLC

Ok, I'll tell you what we did in our plant which handled biomass. We had aboveground conveyors on ground as wll as elevated but all were covered for dust protection.

After seraching through a lot of fire protection systems, we selected wet sprinkler type, with the sprinkler pipe and bulbs mounted from the cover plate directly above the conveyor belt. Also we added a logic to stop ALL conveyors upon fire detection alarm from sprinkler valve i.e. no separate smoke detectors which don't perform effectively in that environment.
