Clampmeter with Higher Accuracy

04/25/2011 1:24 AM

Hi

I have current source of 2000 Amp AC, I want to calibrate my clampmeter having accuracy 0.7%.

Can I find a clampmeter with 0.1 FS accuracy for current measurement. so that i calibrate my other calmpmeters by comparison

I guess you tried looking, but 3 out of 4 of those links are to instruments that are totally unsuitable.

kazengg is looking for a clamp on (AC) ammeter with a 2000 Amp scale and 0.1% full scale accuracy.

The only link that might be useful is the one to Nagman Instruments which seems to be a distributor with links to several manufacturer's sites. I didn't try to go to each site to check them out.

To kazengg--I don't think you're going to find what you're looking for--I suspect you'll have to set up something using a very accurate CT (current transformer) and suitable instruments, or, more likely, have it calibrated by a lab somewhere.

I quit looking after I saw .1 FS. The OP can determine usefulness for his purposes.

Looking for a clamp meter for calibration is not the right option, send the meter to a test laboratory they will be in a position to calibrate it or to provide you with exact errors by using a galvanometer bridge circuit.

Dear,

More practical to get it caliberated in Lab. As 0.1% Accurate CTs are very costly!

I have a Beckman HD110 Industrial Multimeter with CT-231 AC current clamp. It has a range of 150A, 1000V RMS Max. I had this checked for accuracy in the 0 to 5A range where I used it to verify CT current's for metering. It is very accurate and linear.

So yes clamp-on's can do what you are asking.

The source you are looking for for a 2,000 amp clamp-on and meter is http://www.summittechnology.com/

Where they have high voltage probe's and high current clamp-on's with there Power Quality meters.

I can't find a 2000 amp clamp-on and meter at that site.

When I do find something that might be what you're talking about, the accuracy is no where near the 0.1% that the OP is looking for.

For example, I see the FX3000 - Flexible 3000 amp Probe whose accuracy is specified as:

"2% of reading +/- 0.2 amps (for currents below 400 ARMS) or +/- 2 Arms (for currents from 400-3000 ARMS)"

That specification is a little bit ambiguous, I take it to mean that, from 400 to 3000 amps RMS, the accuracy is 2% of reading +/- 2 amps RMS.

Contact them and tell them what you want, Ken Kious is Chief Engineer. He'll be able to tell you what can be done.

It may not be possible to get the accuracy you want with a clamp-on, maybe you need a hard-mounted CT to get the accuracy ?
