Air Compressors

05/06/2011 1:12 PM

Would like to know the merits and demerits of screw vs centrifugal compressors and selection of compressors for particular application ie whether selection would be based on capacity or delivery pressure etc. Would also like to know the effect of ambient temperature if it varies from 5 deg.C in winter to 40 deg.C in summer and points to be considered while carrying out evaluation.

Yes compressor seclection depend on the particular application and it is based on capacity and delivery pressure required. Centrifugal compressors are good for high flow, they have less maintenance but efficiency if compared with screw compressors is low. Screw compressors are almost positive displacement type compressors without valves operation hence highly efficient. Capacity control in screw compressors can be acheived almost stepless from zero to 100% and accordingly power saving is also achieved which is not posible in centrifugal compressors.

Ambient temperature will directly effect the mass flow through inlet hence the capacity of the machine.

Thanks for your prompt response.Generally it is opined that centrifugal compressors are more more energy efficient though not gone into depth.Appreciate if remedial step is suggested to take care during summer where the ambient temperature would be high. One option may be to cool the amient air before feeding the compressor by chilled water system and do not know whether it is technically feasible or not.

Would also like to know the different systems of air dryers and your recommendation for trouble free dryer.

The criteria for choosing a right compressor is CFM. CFM stands for "Cubic Feet per Minute". It is a measurement of volume. Basically it is how much air is being moved.
