Testing Earth Resistance Of Earth Existing Pit

05/07/2011 3:30 AM

Dear Friends,

I have to test earth resistance of an old earth pit. Arround this earth pit all area is cemented and it is very difficult to access to natural soil point to connect my earth resistance testing meter reference probes in fifteen feet area.

Can i connect these reference earth meter probes to the naked iron steel bar of building structure linked to plinth?

Is the obtained resistance reading will be considered correct?

How much deference may be to the resistance to be obtained from direct contact to natural soil?

permitted value of earthing resistance:

R=Vf/Ie

where,

Vf is touch voltage.

Ie is single phase short circuit current.

iftikhar:

You will go against the standard if you utilise the plinths as an electrode. Thing is the existing facility has disadvantage by not designing the test box.

In a certain aspect, if you enure the plinths are contacted with earth. Go ahead with your idea. <10 ohms would be great.

All you could do is trying to persuade the owner that he/she is should allow you to install several earth pits. Of course, he/she could pass this in a certain reason but consider the long term. The disadvantage is still there.

Just wondering how you are measuring resistance. I know of one company that makes equipment for measuring earth resistivity and also for mapping geophysical structure. Here is their website. This may not be relevant and/or may be overkill for what you are trying to do. But I do know that companies that bought their instruments were in the business of doing this kind of service.

Dear Iftikhar,

You can use latest digital clampmeter type Earth Resistance Tester. You simply put the earth lead inside the clamp and switch on the the meter; the meter will show the earth resistance.The geatest advantage of this type of meter is this you don't have to acess the earth pit or dig earth spike in bare soil.
