2002 Dodge Caravan, AC Issue,Moisture On The Ground and Passenger Side Under Glo

05/14/2011 10:42 AM

Wife want$ a new van because the AC took a dump. Anyway, I got some r134a which the van is rated for and put it in the lower fill port on tuesday.

GREAT ! AC checked good but two days later, she was sitting on the passenger side, feet under the glove box and noticed condensation dripping on her foot. At first I suspected the torrential rains we had an hour earlier when she was highway driving through the monsoon.....but friday(yesterday) she thought perhaps the AC wasn't pumping out like it did tuesday

now, I wonder if the freon pressure is dropping and a hose or fitting under the dash may be the the fix.

Also, I noticed wednesday or thursday morning, after she took our son to school and returned, that a wet spot was under the van at about the same spot that the glove box/passenger floorboard is located.

I know the van is pushing 10 yrs old but it has always been a cream puff, would hate to trade it in for a lemon.

?

your thoughts ?

I think it could be this. I just drive mine with no AC and open the window.

This is a good post once you get through the religious references.

Freon doesn't drip, it evaporates.

Water drips, so you may have a clogged drain hose that dumps water from the condensation on the AC coils and that is leaking inside. I don't think so.

I think you shouldn't waste your time and money trying to fix this yourself, since you need specialized equipment to replace a hose, and you aren't supposed to dump Freon into the atmosphere anyway.

Take it to a shop.

I am not going to tear up the inside or engine compartment over the matter. It may be a non issue since we are going to take the van for a good test run today down the highway. I prefer to follow the "expect the worse to happen" mantra. btw, thanks for the reply. I never thougyht it was freon in the first place but rather moisture collecting on a tube.

R134A isn't freon and I doubt my leak will aid what the Chinese are doing with their coal fired powerplants to the atmosphere

It's 134, not Freon (R12)

If you frequently use cabin air recycling instead of outside air (many people do it, heats and defrosts faster) you'll find most of the hair you have lost over the years among other debris on the evaporator fins, since recycled air doesn't pass through cabin air filter in most older and many new cars. So water drain blockage is a possible reason for inside leak. Get professional help, not easy to clean if at all possible. Outside leak is normal. S.M.

I found the source of the leak to be in the air filter compartment. No air filter . I understand from the factory, air filters may not have been installed and I never had a reason to remove it. By the looks of the snap on cover, it appears a rubber seal is also missing. AC seems fine.Had the van since '02 and never recharged the freon/R134A in the system

This is a pretty nice site not only dedicated to automobiles. I think I'll troll the other forums for more advice, maybe even give some

I have had a slow dripping of green coloured liquid at the same spot you described. I took the plastic snap-on cover off and can feel the metal grill that is inside and it looks to me like some filter should slide in there. How did you fix your leak? Did you pick up a filter of some kind? You also mentioned something about a rubber seal - did you put a gasket on the cover or something? Any help is appreciated!

Just a thought:

I drive the same carriage and your passenger gets free water on the floor.

Check the pipe through the fire wall and in the engine compartment, slide a rubber 1/2 inch rubber elbow over that pipe and point the open end towards the ground.

This stopped it with me.

Do it now and thank me later:

The drainage works well when the car stands still, but wind while driving pushes the water inside.

I have cut the lower side under an angle, so you create a venturi.

If the problem returns, I may take you up on your Venturi highway design;

You either have a drain line issue or you charged it wrong and something is freezing rather than chilling (you could also have some pipe insulation that's shifted or separated). When that freezing line accumulates enough moisture it drips. I'd suggest a trip to the A/C repair shop to check the charge and drain coming off the evaporator.
