Calcualtions Needed for a Hydraulic Motor System

04/11/2007 12:57 PM

How do I calculate a complete hydraulic system to run just an hydraulic motor, with variable speed?

That's a short question for a pretty big problem. Start with the no load Rpm and maximum torque required. Then select a hyd motor with the appropriate characteristics. Determine the HP requirement, based on max Rpms rq'd at max torque. Size your power supply accordingly, allowing for system inefficiency. Select a pump with sufficient gpm, an appropriate reservoir for cooling and you're on your way

Hydraulic Pumps and Motors are hydrostatic components.

The converstion of mechanical torque by means of operating pressure and stroke volume,or vice versa,is the same on all hydrostatic machines.

For torque, this can be seen from the basic formula(without degree of efficiency).

M= ΔP .Vh/2.Π

Pump M= drive torque

Motor M=driven torque(with out η ).

ΔP = Pressure drop between outlet and inlet ,of the pump ,inlet and outlet of the motor

Vh =geometric stroke volume

Any Fluid Power Distributer will design your system for FREE.

They have Sales/Application Engineers who do this all the time.

Get their design and quote and then shop it around for the best price.
