Hydro Power-Clarification Request On Certain Doubts

05/15/2011 10:51 AM

Greetings to fellow Members at CR4.

Requesting members on clarification of the following points/ doubts regarding Hydro power.

1] For a large scale Hydro Power plant, say a 1000 M.Watts ultra power plant-what could be the ideal individual turbines size, so as to work flexibily as Base load as well as peak load power plant.

The break up can be like this 1]50% capacity as base load & 50 % capacity as peak load, 2]75 % capacity as base load & 25% as peak load.

2] What range of unifrom Turbine capacites are best suited for such a set up in the long run[ 50 MW or 100 M.W or suitable other capacities?]

2] Excluding the civil costs part of a Hydro Power plant, is there any relationship exist between costs of Turbine capacity Vs respective Electrical generator?

Any data base or any correlationship or reference sources are most welcome.

I do 3D modeling for a company that makes formwork for constructing dams, tunnels, bridges, etc. We are currently working on 2 in Canada and one here in the states. I can't directly answer your question, but we are building the outflow from the turbines and that is 25+ feet in diameter on the largest, with 3 making up one station. The outflow then divides into 3 channels per turbine. I will look in the contract drawings and see if i can find estimated wattage, but they are construction drawings, not technical ones.

Even a small hydro plant as the Pykara one in the Nilgiris had four turbines way back in 1954 (I visited this as a high school student). The shift engineer told me that it was to minimise load stress to 25% /machine in case of breakdown/maintenance. This may have to be taken into consideration in your assessment.

However, having more turbines has other investment implications.

Thank you Sir for the inputs.

If you take Kadamparai, pumped storage power plant as an example, you have four branchings 100 M.W each for the total of 400M.W capacity.

My case is related to ultra power plants[ base as well as peak load options] normally ranging from a minimum plant capacity levels 1000 M.Watts.

Break down safety is one criteria as you have mentioned rightly.

You should go for 3 to 5 equal sized turbo generators depending on % peak load.
