Wet Test for Cables

05/18/2011 6:03 AM

Hi all friends.

I saw most cable factory do a wet test for cables. There are a few question I am not sure why and how.

First Q: what kind of cable do we need to do the wet test?

Second Q: why should we connect the +ve lead to the earth and -ve lead to the conductor of cable?

I asked a couple engineers about the 2nd question, they can not tell me why, they said it is in their specification. and they did the connect for years.

I wish one of you can tell me why, and where I can find a reference standard.

any comments about wet test are welcome.

If all answers r available on the internet, or even there is an answer, if everyone find the answers by searching. We won't have forum such as cry4 anymore. We won't need forums. U can tell me the answer if u knew it. Sure you don't hv to . I am expecting others. I always think there is no stupid question at all. There is only stupid people does not want to ask question.

Don't worry about it. A few around here seem to be suffering Guest postpartum. AKA someone to belittle. Just take heart in that if they actually think they know they will generally be bursting to answer with some sort of information. Otherwise just assume they don't know.

Joining the conductors 'might be' so you have one circuit in series to test verses a detector conductor ...

I think CR4 will be around for a long time. Fortunately there are enough legitimate questions to keep most interested.

Unfortunately, there will always be those who ask questions like "if my operator tells me he has gauge that fluctuates what I do?"

It is painfully obvious that many people come here first before doing even the most elementary search for themselves.

Cheers.

Re: Unfortunately, there will always be those who ask questions like "if my operator tells me he has gauge that fluctuates what I do?"

I have no problem with that. I'd like to help him. If that's where he's starting from, so be it.

(Help might result in a variety of resolutions--he might decide he needs to get some formal education, he might decide he needs to switch careers, he might learn to search elsewhere on the Internet, or, of course (and unfortunately), he might end up hurting himself or others. (I hope not, and will do what I can to avoid that.) (I haven't tried to think of all the possible outcomes.)

He might have a good education, but never have dealt with an operator, or a problem, or a chance to think for himself. (Or he might have little or no education, yet also never dealt with an operator, ...

When all else fails, ask the instructor. That's what they get paid for

dear,

IS clearly explains the procedure for wet test.

2> probably, this is related to the test set up. Just, there are 2 systems - negative earth system / positive earth system.

Your test set up must be with positive earth system. Can you please mail the drawing of test set up? that will answer.

there are too many bla bla ders around. they should be on talk show, not in the technical forum.

HI hurry,

you are right, we use the positive earth system for the test. BUT the negative earth system works as well.

specification recommends the positive earth system without a reason.

Do you know any benefits with the positive earth system?

I found corrosion may be an issue. but this would not be a concern for the cable insulation resistance test. would the spec still rrecommended a positive earth system?

I hate it when someone tells me "because we always do it this way" as an answer to a valid question of "why do you do that?". If you can get access to their specifications you may find the answer there.

people on the same position for years, they have learnt how to follow the routine with out asking any questions.

teh standard spec only tells how to do , and what to do. but it doesnt tell WHY.

the specification only recommended the positive earth system.
