Screen for Sea Water Intake

05/30/2011 7:44 AM

Our fire water is taken from the sea and the suction lines of 12" diameter are cabon steel with cement lining. We are replacing the submerged sections of these lines and are looking at installing a screen at the end of the pipe which is under water to prevent sand and other matter getting sucked in. What is the best material for this screen , what mesh size to use and how to attach it onto the end of the 12" line. Thanks in advance.

You may want to look into utilizing either HDPE-based or copper/bronze-based intake screens to minimize mussels attachment to the screens and inside of your intake pipe. Also look into lining your intake pipes, valves and appurtenances with likewise materials because mussels and their larvae can attach to untreated intake piping etc. Do a Google search regarding intake performance and related scientific testing of mussel repellance......it is invaluable information! There is a lot of information available, especially with testing materials to repel Zebra Mussels.

Screen size and opening size will be dictated by hydraulic properties, such as the water flow rate and inlet velocities. You must check with the individual screen manufacturers and review their technical data as well as independent (meaning un-bias) testing agency/laboratory testing reports.

Good luck!

appurtenances?

Now there's a word you don't run across every day.

Ahhhh, it's my favorite "catch-all" word, yes that one is!

I failed to mention in my previous posting that it's imperative to install (and utilize) a air or and/water blow-back system to rid the build-up of critters and sand from the intake screens and inlet piping. Also, Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) solution injected at the inlet works wonders too warding off mussel infestation....ditto with injection of a strong Chlorine solution, such as Chlorine Dioxide.

Remember the troops today.....those that have fallen, the Veterans, and those currently serving!

Yes, of course.

Hats off to those who have, and will serve our country.

Sounds like you have some experience with, and a fondness for, those lovable Zebra Mussels, Capt.
