Rolling Sphere Method Simulation

06/06/2011 11:25 AM

Does anyone know of a good software that can be used to simulate the Rolling Sphere Method of lightning protection? I have cad drawings and information on the system as is (size and placement of masts and equipment to be protected, stroke distance, etc.). But when I present this, I would like to have an easy to read graphical representation, rather than just hand sketched areas of protection. I am new to the forums here, if anyone thinks I should move this to the Software and Programming section let me know. Thanks for any help.

The only software that I could find in any of those links was information on lightning. I simply want a software that will simulate a rolling sphere through an environment with obstacles that when it comes in contact with an object it will roll up and over, and leave a distinct path behind it showing where it has/has not touched (in 3D). Like one that would be used when running simulations for mapping out the protected areas using the Rolling Sphere Method.

If you return to wareagle's Google search, and look carefully, you will find the following link:

http://www.crazyengineers.com/forum/electrical-electronics-engineering/40057-cad-system-lightning-protection.html

Which has embedded in it a link to the software package, "3dDesignBand.3dLightning_v1_21.exe", which is exactly what you asked for. Unfortunately, it only works on Windows, inside AutoCAD...

As you have discovered the method is specific to lightning so generalized software probably doesn't exist. The method seems simple enough so that a talented programmer can write a program that suits your needs; as an alternative I'll bet that you can input the existing CAD drawing files into a general purpose 3D CAD program and let it do the drawing for you.

You can search the CR4 site using the "Search all of CR4" tool and find that there are multiple threads with exactly the same question.
