Adhesives for joining Teflon and Stainless Steel

04/13/2007 11:42 AM

I have a stainless steel cooling table 4'X8'. I want to make it a non stick surface by lining it with a 0.020" Teflon sheet. My problem is that when I dump the molten mass of material at 170 deg C the teflon sheet comes unglued.

Does any body know or recommend an adhesive that can withstand that temperature without coming undone

At the ends of the table use bolted on steel bands to hold the teflon layer down.

you need to wrap over and around the two long edges and then underneath the table have the ends gripped with a little tension with a clamping strip. The other two sides clamp the same way. This will give you a full free surface to work on. due to expansion it is wise to have some springiness in the clamps. One could put eyelets on the teflon and use laces to tighten it, making sure you do not tear it with the grommets. possibly a reinforcing strip?

Treatment of the bond side of the teflon with sodium-napthalene bath (pretreated teflon can be purchased) will provide a bondable surface. 3M #2214 hi temp adhesive is good to 177 degree C. Alternative is to obtain a good epoxy based upon a Novolak resin.

You're living proof that given any two materials, someone will want to glue them together.

Teflon has been touted for years as the stuff that "nothing" sticks to. But in your case, hmmmm. I don't know... How about a couple of BOLTS AND NUTS!!!

Just kidding

Take a step back & have the table top powder coated w/Teflon

There are very good pressure sensitive tape choices that will bond to the teflon on one side and the stainless steel on the other side. We have a double coated polyester with a high bond silicone adhesive both sides. #D644 generates 60 oz/inch adhesion to steel and a very good bond to teflon.

Description

Product D644 is 1.0 mil polyester with a high performance silicone adhesive on each side. It is an excellent choice for splicing silicone release liners and coated papers; along with joining rubbers, foams, plastics and hard-coated or low energy substrates.

To achieve ultimate adhesion, the bonding surface should be dry, clean and free of dirt and oils. The strength of the adhesive bond is dependent on the amount of surface area directly contacting the adhesive. Firm pressure is recommended to obtain good adhesive to surface contact.
