Short Circuit Calculation for Bus Bar of 220 V

06/09/2011 6:56 AM

My 220 V DC bus bar is connected with DC battery of 1800AH rating with around 400A continuous load. Also charger of 220V, 400A battery charger is also connected to bus bar and charger is fed with a 415 V ac supply. Please help me to find bus bar short circuit rating.

Depending on the battery chemistry, you may turn your bus bars into fuses instead of virtual ideal conductors. I would expect that the output impedance of your batteries for each battery to be so low that the bus bar resistance will quickly change as it vaporizes and liquefies at the accidental contact.

What is the rating of the fuse(s) that you are using to limit the excessive short circuit current on the bus from the battery bank in the event of an accidental short circuit on the bus? The busbars should be sized based on the fuse rating and curve.

Sizing busbars for maximum short circuit current and not using protective devices is pointlessly expensive (and dangerous) as the batteries will continue to feed current into a fault until something either catches fire, melts or explodes.

What is the application (or is this a theoretical exercise).

Can you please provide more information.

you should have internal resistance of battery & impedence of 220v 400A battery charger. then you can calculate the bus bar short circuit rating by v/(r(battery resistance)+z(battery charger impedance)
