Heat Conductive Adhesive for Anodized Alumium Heat Sink

06/13/2011 4:25 PM

Hello,

I am looking for an adhesive which is highly heat conductive since it will be used to stick anodized aluminium heat sinks to an oil tank. Thermal tape is included with the heat sinks. I guess it might do the job, but I doubt it can last 10 years. I would like to know if someone have any idea about what type of adhesive could be use for that particular application.

Thanks.

Not an endorsement, but Digi-Key and many others have conductive adhesives. I'd use an epoxy, if it were me. Some folks like the Loctite products, but I'm not a great fan of them.

Surface preparation is as important as adhesive selection. Be sure the surfaces are very clean. Sand the tank and clean well.

Good luck.

Search google for "Thermal Paste" or "Thermal Grease". Ton's of items out there for exactly these purposes. Most of them have bits of metal within the paste to aid its conductivity.

The OP is looking for an adhesive, not a grease.

Truck bodies are being built with double-sided tape. In use, it is protected from the environment anyway. Have you looked up the specs on what is proposed? Usually, the reluctance to use VHB tape is over the cost, until people see the labor savings.

2 component liquid metal - aluminium containing epoxy - used in plumbing DIY, if electrical conductivity is allowed. good answer for Lynn

I have used aluminium powder filled two component epoxy for a similar application. It performed well for about three years or so after which I left. Cannot say about 10years.

10 years is asking too much. Any paste 'or' grease may get degraded and loose its conduction properties due to environmental factors. As far as adhesiveness is concerned for such a long time, I would suggest you look for some kind of mechanical locking like screwing the heat sink on to the tank with a well selected thermal grease in between. Look up www.timtronics.com based in US and they have a presence in Canada too.

Take care to prepare mating surface properly as suggested by Lyn. Thermal grease/paste are only to fill up air gaps. They cannot conduct like metals and should be of minimum thickness possible. alas! they become a barrier instead.
