Linear Expansion Rate in 321 SS Pipe at 600 Celcius

06/13/2011 11:41 PM

can anyone tell me the expansion rate of 2000 mm long 321 stainless tube please 30 mm OD , 3 mm wall thickness at 600 celcius ?

assume heat applied on one side only but the tube is filled with H2O

thnx

The expansion rate is not dependent on length, diameter, wall thickness or temperature of the material. The expansion rate of 321 tube can be found in many resources here on the web.

Then, there's thermal conductivity to consider, along with radiation, etc.

Do you want the answer, or do you want help understanding how to get the answer?

both the answer and help to arrive at the answer would be nice if you can point me at the maths ?

my intent is to determine how much room i need to allow for linear expansion in an assembled collector array .

thermal conductivity is an unknown because i would probably be looking at a black ceramic coating on the tube ( type not yet determined ) , and i dont yet have a rate of flow of water / steam through the tubes , so expansion in the basic SS tube is the first factor i want to assess but i aknowledge it will be approximate until i can relate the affect of those other factors

thankyou kindly

CTE, linear 500°C
It expands the same amount in all directions.

18.5 µm/m-°C

10.3 µin/in-°F

Which is the expansion rate of your coating ? If the difference between its own and the one of the SS tube is too great the coating can be destroyed !!
