Class D Audio Amplifier?

I was browsing for IGBT switching drives, and come to find a rather interesting one.

It seams the drive is ideal for use in Class D audio amplifiers! Well, a few more browses and find that this type of audio amplifiers can excite the output stage ( imagine) by using PWM! I find hard to modulate a sine wave with just 50Hz, what to tell the audio bands with all those harmonics!!! But I am very curious to know if it were made, or there are more to it...

The real advantage of IGBT's becomes evident in relatively high voltages and moderate switching frequencies. While ther's no harm experimenting, results can be pretty much predictable. The generally higher comparing to MOSFETS gate capacitance, longer on and off delays and current tail at turn-off will force a design with longer dead times to avoid overshoot, something that leads to worse response and higher distortion as signal frequency goes up, plus lower switching frequency will force using bulky and more complicated (i.e. higher order) output filters. But for an amp to drive a super power, high impedance subwoofer, why not? S.M.

Yes, for a sub woofer I see advantages ( and power gains!). for other freqs I see loads of troubles- audio freqs. range from 10 to 20000Hz, and in high-end audio they sometimes double the band...so you have 40000-5=39995Hz of bandwith...to modulate a single sine wave you got or to configure the PWM generator with hardware or the controller by software, and for each frequency, or set of frequencies, lines of code must be processed, or pretty complex circuit be made!.

so you see (and please someone correct me if I am wrong) for high end audio amplifier I can start to count in a simple analysis at least 39995 big problems!!

but I don't know what type of material you work with, tell me what you have in mind ;)

Sorry for delayed responce. Exactly. 'Hi-end' being very subjective, current generation IGBT's are marginally not up to this partiqular task, in the sense that the job can be done easier with the more mature Mosfet technology. Future? Can't predict. Claims are always welcome. S.M.

Check out these guys.. I've bought their Class D amp circuits.. very efficient.
