What is the function of QDC supply of AC alternator while synchronisation of AC generators

Why post anonymously? We all ask questions, none of us know everything, its nothing to be ashamed of.

I only know that a QDC is needed if you do not have an AVR (automatic voltage regulator). I as well would be very interested to know its exact function.
