The Kutztown 13

08/10/2005 3:30 PM

Thirteen high school students from Kutztown, Pennsylvania (US) have been charged with computer trespass, a criminal offense that state law defines as altering computer data, programs or software without permission. The alleged misdeeds of the Kutztown 13 include gaining unlimited Internet access, downloading instant messaging programs, and using a remote monitoring function to view administrators' computer screens. The students did not, however, attack the school's network or alter grades.

Neither side is playing with a full deck here

The students involved were warned repeatedly to stop messing around with the system, to the point where the students (and their parents?!) signed forms saying they would knock it off. They didn't. Game over - they should be punished, plain and simple. On the other hand, felony charges?! What are the administrators thinking? Go ahead and suspend the students for a week or two. If that doesn't work, expell them. But felony charges? Yikes!

Seems to me both sides are behaving badly here. Someone needs to stand up and provide some leadership here.

I'm just wondering why they thought they wouldn't be caught? Especially if people knew they were prone to this kind of behavior. I also don't get why the firewalls and filters weren't implemented at the router to the outside or the server rather than on the laptops? Also if the teachers say it's ok to spy on the students then how can they be surprised when the students spy on them?
All in all this was a good idea improperly implemented by people who don't understand technology. If you don't leave your password taped to the back of a computer don't be surprised when people use it.
