Power generation from Cotton Waste

06/28/2011 12:46 AM

At present Fire wood is being used to generate Steam.

Can we use Cotton waste instead of fire wood to generate steam?

How much cotton waste required?

Do we require to change in boiler set-up?

Any CDM benefit is available?

Another option is to generate power from cotton waste

pl provide details to generate 1 MW power - boiler requirement and other details

What you are looking for is a total feasibility report and then the project design.

No one would do that for free. Get a consultant, if you really feel it is useful.

Frankly I don't.

1. The combustibility of Wood is much higher (and that is due to the volatile contents too) which is processed out in cotton.

2. In my factory I use cotton waste for cleaning . And I don't like the smoke that goes out when it catches fire (and that is for clean not soild cotton waste) In fact I have seen some deliberate fire (in small pieces of it of course) that workers do once in a while to get rid of mosquitoes, despite warnings about hazards.

Theoretically yes, but I wouldn't recommend it.

How much cotton waste required?

Far more than you realise.

Do we require to change in boiler set-up?

It depends on on how long you want your system to work for.

Any CDM benefit is available?

Over wood, unlikely unless you are using polluted wood.

Another option is to generate power from cotton waste

Theoretically possible, even less recommended.

Sorry this is an engineering discussion website, not your own personal free engineering consultancy. I only train our consultants how to do their paid job.

Try an internet search first, and also look into your local environmental regulations regarding burning cotton first before you go any further or consider hiring a consultant.

You make good points, Jack. Except for near the end. His question is a valid question for CR4. He was only trying to spark a discussion on an idea he had. That's exactly what we're here for. I don't believe he intended us to give him a free consult. It's his first post. No need to discourage him from coming back by being bullish.

Given the technical and broad nature of the question and the limited information provided I think I covered all the bases nicely. I could have added 'please provide more information on your application, etc' for clarity.

Given ajsmmill final comment 'pl provide details to generate 1 MW power - boiler requirement and other details' I think I was quite constrained.

Yes, I spoke hastily.

I do try to promote congeniality towards new members here. That quite often is not the case, especially from many of the old timers here. An influx of new people is something we definitely need, and they are often scared away before they barely get started.

But... having said that... I missed his last line. My bad.

Safest thing to do is bale it up and sell it to Jack for cleaning use and pay your electric bill with the 'profit'. :)
