ESA to Launch a Gigapixel Space Camera in 2013

07/06/2011 3:36 PM

The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to launch the Gaia spacecraft in spring of 2013. The spacecraft will contain a billion pixel camera.

From the Gaia wiki entry:

Gaia will create an extremely precise three-dimensional map of stars throughout our Milky Way galaxy and beyond, and map their motions which encode the origin and subsequent evolution of the Milky Way. The spectrophotometric measurements will provide the detailed physical properties of each star observed, characterising their luminosity, effective temperature, gravity and elemental composition. This massive stellar census will provide the basic observational data to tackle a wide range of important problems related to the origin, structure, and evolutionary history of our Galaxy. Large numbers of quasars, galaxies, extrasolar planets and solar system bodies will be measured at the same time.

Really cool stuff.

Interesting stuff, can't wait to see the images. We were involved in the earlier XMM project referred to in the story & have worked with e2v on other projects but I don't believe they are using our devices in this mission.

Billion pixs,WOW nice, To achieve this it must have a barrier enforcement at the range at 14 hence-jewels at a klone rate of 12881.5 thats incredible I wonder if a klone rate aperture would improve the camera it is up to speculation however sustained in aperture. Please don't take this the wrong way, but are you just making up words and stringing them together into incomprehensible sentences?

I ask because I've never heard of the terms "hence-jewels" nor "klone rate" and a quick internet search brought nothing for those terms.
