Vehicle smoke

04/17/2007 5:17 AM

Dear Sir,

What could be the reason for emitting White / black color exhaust smoke from a vehicle? Is it an indication of excessive burning of lube oil or fuel?

There are different causes of smoke, according to its color.

Clear white smoke, specially in the early hours and initial engine movement in the morning, means water condensation.

Black smoke indicates excess in fuel in the mixture.

Dark blue smoke indicates oil burning.

You don,t say if its petrol or diesel

In petrol engine the black smoke is cased by rich fuel mixture, this is either due to a carburetor - fuel injection problem or a blocked air filter resulting in air starvation.

White smoke on a cold start engine is normally condensation and is normal.

White smoke in a hot engine means excess water in the combustion process and is indicative of a blown cylinder head gasket.

A blue haze from the exhaust indicates the burning of lube oil in the engine

A diesel engine is basically the same, but black smoke is usually attributed to dirty injectors
