Material Properties of EN 8 and EN 24?

Please do not confuse these EN with the current EN. EN 8 is just plain AISI 1040, EN 24 is a gear material, give me some time to dig it out or may be any local steel merchant should help....

These EN specs (not current European EN steel) are prevalent in Indian steel markets since last 60 years.

This is further to the details already given for EN8 and EN24 Steels earlier.

It is from BS 971 standard steels, now have changed in numbers, which I do not have at present.

EN24 is a (1.5% Ni,Cr,Mo) steel in US equivalent to SAE 4340,

Chemical Composition % - Carbon 0.35-0.45/ Silicon 0.10-0.35/ Manganese 0.45-0.70/ Nickel 1.30-1.80 / Chromium 0.90-1.40/ Moly 0.20-0.35/ Sulphur 0.050 (max)/ Phosphorous 0.050(max).

Mechanical Properties -

Limiting Ruling Section (in) - 6

Tensile Strength (tons/sq.in.) - 55 (min)

Proof Stress (tons/sq.in.) - 41 (min)

Elongation % - 18 (min)

Izod Impact Value (Ft.Lb.) 40(min)

Weldability - POOR

Application - High tensile steel suitable for pump shafts and turbine rotors in general and for similar uses. Non-preferred but sometime used in place of EN 27 steel when the later not available.

EN8 in US equivalent is to AISI - C 1038/ C1041,

Chemical composition % - Carbon 0.35-0.46/ Silicon 0.05-0.35/ Manganese 0.60-1.0/ Sulphur 0.06(max)/ Phosphorus 0.06(max).

Mechanical properties - normalised /hardened and tempered

Limiting Ruling Section (in) - 6 /2 1/2

Tensile Strength (tons/sq.in) - 35 (min) /40 (min)

Yield Strengh (tons/sq.in.) - 18 (min) /28 (min)

Elongation % - 20 /22

Izod Impact Value (Ft.Lb) - 25 (min)

Weldability POOR

Application - Medium strength material used for nuts, for high tensile studs and for rotor forgings. Obtainable in various grades A,B,C,D, and E according to properties required.

Pls advice me the Equivalent material of En24 which is easily avalible in market.

Bright bars, as the name suggests, are machined to required perfection and may have different chem comp, mech properties, and therefore, different applications; however, most of the time they are made up of plain mild steel (AISI 1030).
