Crossover cables are used when connecting computer directly to another computer with a single Ethernet cable and not going through a router or hub. Wiki might not be considered a reliable source, but it has some good information. Cross Over Cable

Most Ethernet ports are smart enough to use a straight through cable (same color wires on both ends), or a crossover cable, autodetecting which is used. We just placed an introductory video on our new Google+ profile page explaining this while setting up an AB ControlLogix PAC/PLC on WiFi.
